Very Few People Reach Ultimate Success. Here’s Why — And How You Can Be One Of Them
Everybody dreams. We dream of recognition and stability, wealth and stardom. We dream of becoming great at whatever it is we love to do — music, baseball, business, writing. To dream is to be human.
Yet, so few of us actually take the leap and do what is necessary to go out and chase our dreams down. We forget, in other words, about our ambitions and settle for something less.
We create excuses for this, too. It’s not the right time, we say. We’re too busy, we say.
Or, we try one or two times, fail, and say, “Well, I tried. I guess I can’t do this.”
Here’s the truth: those who never reach success only have their excuses to blame.
Look, it’s never the right time to pursue your dreams.
And you’ll never achieve whatever it is you want to achieve if you wait until it feels right. The stars will never so perfectly align.
What compels successful people into action is not some sensitivity to the signs of the universe, but rather, an urgency that makes it impossible to continue doing nothing.
It follows, then, that what you need to do to start actually chasing your dreams is to adopt that kind of urgency. To that end, ask yourself this: how will you feel if you hit 95, and you’re on your deathbed, and you never did any of the things you wanted to do?
If you think about this potential scenario often, you’ll find it increasingly difficult to continue being complacent.
Still, though, it will always be easier to make excuses.
Especially when the going gets tough.
This is something I’ve learned from experience. When I was earlier in my career, all of my money was stolen by my accountant. I then proceeded to sell my company in a shortsighted way, resulting in my not receiving the shares I was entitled to. I came very close to losing everything.
In that moment, sitting in the living room of an apartment I could barely afford to pay the rent on any longer, I almost gave up. The only other time in my life where I’ve come so close occurred when I was younger, when my sister told me that I would never amount to anything, so why didn’t I just stop trying so hard to be a “big shot”?
I can honestly attribute the success I’ve experienced since then to the fact that I didn’t listen to her, and that I didn’t give up when I ran into adversity.
Pursue your dreams with determination and urgency, and don’t opt for the “easy” option.
From where I stand today — a New York Times bestselling author, financially comfortable, the father of two wonderful children — I understand that at least one key to achieving success, no matter who you are, is operating with urgency and persistence.
My advice to those who maybe today feel as I did all those years ago, when I was broke and alone, is this: 1) don’t listen to the naysayers, and 2) don’t give up. Also: push yourself to work harder than you likely are. If you’re not doing something to further your progress in pursuit of your most genuine ambitions right now, remind yourself how bad you’ll feel if you hit the end of the road and are plagued by regret.
